Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the US, is a rapper and actress. The role of Queen Latifah on television, film as well as music has earned her several awards. This includes a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Additional Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens, both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who taught in Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was born into the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted her the stage name Latifah that means delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah was always tall, standing 5'10" and was the center forward on her high school basketball team. The song she sang was"Home" from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah started beatboxing in the fresh rap ladies. Latifah used to be a member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah rap Princess of the Posse. He handed the recording over to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and made a deal with Latifah in 1988 for the release of her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
